Right of Way: How to Design Safer Streets for Our Communities
Salam Rida
Department of Planning & Development
Urban Designer | Long Range Planning
City of Jackson
with special guest
Bob Wilson
Executive Director, Mississippi Association
of General Contractors
The past three years have been the deadliest for people walking in almost three decades. This happens in part because transportation decision-makers continue to design our communities to prioritize vehicles—not people—as quickly as possible, creating dangerous, highspeed environments. By adopting a complete street policy and redesigning our roads to prioritize people over vehicles we can begin to address this issue as well as increase economic and community development. Through small scale demonstration projects, like PARK(ing) Day, communities can learn how to test out low cost ways to create safer streets.
